Alloy vs Steel Wheels

When you're facing the prospect of buying new wheels you always ask yourself "steel or alloy?".
Besides the fact that the alloy rims look better, there are also technical reasons for going choosing them.

Lower Weight
It is the their main advantage over steel wheels. All the elements that surround the wheel (tires, braking and steering system parts) are most affected by shocks as they are not protected by any shock absorber. The more weight in the wheel, the more effect shocks have on these elements. Low weight wheels also require less energy to be controlled.

Acceleration And Braking
Lighter wheels also help reduce the total mass of the automobile so it will do a better job at accelerating and braking.

Increased Rigidity
A vehicle rolling on alloy rims is much easier to control than one on steel wheels. The increased rigidity of the alloy does not allow the wheels to deflect as easy as the steel ones. This improves cornering and lateral stability providing better steering and handling.

Quicker Cooling
Alloy wheels are excellent thermal conductors, thus improving heat dissipation. The large openings that characterize alloy rims also help venting the brakes, cooling them down faster.
